Couldn't find a car show, so we went to the KC Classic Auto Display in Lenexa instead

You know what's strange is that there isn't a car show around here at any given time of the day. For example, say you were home watching your kid on a Friday morning, and you wanted to go to a car show. So you check out the weekly calendar on HMC, and guess what--no car show is scheduled for that time.

So now what? Well, if you were like me, you find someplace that has some old cars you can look at. This time it was the KC Classic Auto Display in Lenexa, Kan.

This place has been here for many years, so they're obviously doing something right. Here, you will not typically find the most high-end classics with the most dazzling restorations. This is a good place to go if you're looking for a decent cruise night ride.

The cars are parked in a dusty old warehouse building. Well, maybe "parked" isn't the right word. They're crammed in there, with a few dim light bulbs scattered high in the ceiling. You are definitely not wowed by the magnificence of the facility.

A large section of the building is blocked off, because it is full of cars that people are paying to store there. So your $1.00 admission doesn't really get you unlimited access.

Actually, I know it's only a buck, but there's something about having the guy chase you down to get it that has always kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I've been going there for some 20 years, and we continue to pay it, so I guess it isn't a deal-breaker. But it still feels dumb.

There are always some interesting things to check out, though. A bright yellow '55 T-Bird was a real standout near the front of the building. There was an intriguing '67 Corvette coupe that someone recently dug out of a garage after many years of neglect and inactivity. There were some really desirable nameplates in there like Shelby Mustangs, GTOs, and early Challengers. And they still had Joy's Subaru Brat from My Name is Earl from our last visit there.

The KC Classic Auto Display is open from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and sometimes on Saturday. For more information on the display, current vehicle prices, directions, and more, you can visit their website at http://www.kcclassicauto.com/.

Or, if you want to see what I thought was interesting, there's a slideshow below with more than 100 pictures.

  1. You do such a fine job by giving us a ton of pix. Not just the obligatory front & rear shots, but underhood (when possible) & dash-seat shots. You rule!
