The North Kansas City Cruise Night is successful. Maybe too successful. A look at the July festivities

The summer car cruise in North Kansas City has been a second-Saturday tradition for years, and that tradition was kept alive this weekend in the parking lot across the street from the NKC Pro Bowl.

This is still a pretty nice cruise, with several cars from the area turning out to listen to well-known Kansas City disc jockey Phil Jay spinnin' the Mustang Sally.

In a way, it is a victim of its own success. The popularity of events like this one have spurred similar cruises to pop up all over town. At the same time as this North Kansas City cruise, folks could also attend very strong cruise nights in Independence and Merriam, Olathe, Overland Park, St. Joseph, and Topeka.

So even though there is still a nice selection of cars at this get-together, it isn't as strong as it used to be. You still always get the die-hards--folks that wouldn't miss this cruise for anything--plus a number of new or different rides each month.

As far as favorites, there was a 1920s Buick sedan that I thought was pretty cool because it was so original, a '61 Bonneville that I've admired before, and a very original '66 Suburban with rare factory air conditioning.

There was also a Gremiln sitting there, and seven-year-old BHo, fresh off of viewing Cars 2, shouted out, "hey look, a Lemon!" I'm sure the guy who brought it was thrilled.
