Outta' Control Hot Rods car cruise in Platte City was not as unruly as the name implies

Last weekend I saw event organizer Larry Colstion at a different car show, and he reminded me that I needed to get up and check out the action at the Platte City monthly cruise again.

But then I remembered that the name of the host car club is "Outta' Control Hot Rods and Cruisers," and I started getting worried. I mean, I don't know if I'm wild enough to hang out with people that are so out of control that they name themselves something like that.

I did get up the nerve to head north, though. And I'll tell you what--things could have gotten hairy. I saw local TV reporter Betsy Webster cruise through the lot in the KCTV-5 news van. I'm guessing that she got a report of some out of control hot rods and came to investigate.

She never got out of the van, though. And you know why? Everything was pretty much under control. The crowd wasn't unruly at all. No one torched the Pizza Shoppe or tried to shake down the folks working in the Mr. Goodcents. I never noticed a drive-by shooting or a violent tussle. There wasn't even any public nudity.

I wouldn't say they had a huge turnout, but that wasn't because Larry and the crew weren't trying. They were playing music over a loud speaker, they had 50/50 tickets, and they were even drawing for sponsor-provided prizes.

Of course, they were fighting ridiculous heat. And as you can see by the events calendar I post on here every week, there are lots of other places for people to take their old cars. But still, this was a pretty huge event as recently as last year, and there's no reason it can't be again. Outta' Control Hot Rods is a new host club, and they're still trying to get their legs under them. But all the ingredients are there for a popular monthly event.

There are two more of these Platte City cruises scheduled this year, so get your red pen out and mark the calendar. Ready? OK. They'll be held on August 20 and September 17.

But the July cruise is over. Did you miss it? Well, you lucked out this time, because I took a bunch of pictures, which you can see in the slideshow below. But don't expect me to bail you out in the future.
