Basehor Boys get an early start to the Kansas City car cruise season

The Basehor Boys Car Club is one of the earliest to begin their cruise season, and one of the latest to wrap it up.  These guys love to get together, and it showed once again during their season-opener last Friday night at the Sonic off State Avenue.  It was a surprisingly nice night, and there were quite a few cars that emerged from winter hibernation.  I made sure to bring my camera, even though decent photos were a little hard to get amid the harsh setting sun.

2013 Basehor-Linwood Project Grad Car Show: Better late than ever

Organizers at the Basehor-Linwood High School Project grad Car Show had a big decision to make.  Keep the original Saturday date, or listen to the rain-soaked weather forecast and move it to Sunday up against the Chiefs Game.  They chose the latter option.  And even though the turnout was a bit lighter than in years’ past, it was still a nice bunch of cars.  Saturday indeed ended up being a washout, and Sunday was one of the most beautiful days of the year.  They clearly made the right decision.

Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise draws in some nice cars

One of the nicer cruises in the Kansas City area is the Basehor Boys Cruise at the Basehor Sonic, which is held on the second Friday of each month.  I hadn’t been able to get there yet this year for one reason or another, but I was finally able to break away last week to check out some of the great cars on display.  Combine all that with nice people, nearby food, and a little music, and you have one of those events that should be on everyone’s list.

15th Annual Basehor-Linwood High School Project Grad Car Show packed 'em in again

I don’t know how they do it, but this Basehor-Linwood High School Project Grad Car Show packs ‘em in every year.  This was the 15th edition of this event, and although the car count may have been a little bit down from last year, there was still plenty to look at.

As you can see from the pictures, this is quite a diverse car show.  You might get an interesting car that belongs to one of the high school kids, and it’ll be parked next to a high-dollar muscle car.  Over here you had a car that was built by George Barris in the early ‘50s, and over there was a Yugo (I kid you not).

Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise is still good, even if you get there late

If you hang out here on occasion, you may know that my dad had a heart valve replacement this week.  I’m happy to report that the surgery went well, and he’s resting semi-comfortably at St. Luke’s hospital.  It’ll obviously take awhile to fully recover from this, but at least he cleared a major hurdle.

Since I’ve been spending a lot of time at the hospital after work this week, it means I haven’t written that many stories for the blog.  I was determined to get to an event Friday night, and even though I was late to the party, I eventually made it to the Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise.

Basehor Boys kick off the 2012 Kansas City car cruise season

All these new car shows and auto museums are nice, but I've been itchin' for a normal old car cruise for months now. And as it turns out, the same guys that had the last cruise of the season in 2011 came through with the first cruise of the year in 2012.

The Basehor Boys Car Club hosts these monthly cruises in the parking lot adjacent to the Sonic Drive-In in Basehor. And for a cool, dark night in March, I'd say they had a pretty nice turnout. Dozens of hot rod owners made it out to nosh on foot-long hot dogs and creamsicle slushes, and it was a positive start to this year's car cruise season.
