Platte City Cruise wraps it up for the season

If you were looking for old cars in the Kansas City area last weekend, you were going to find most of them in Ottawa.  But it also happened to be the final Outta’ Control Hot Rods Pizza Shoppe Cruise of the year in Platte City, and I really wanted to check that out too.  Surprisingly, it wasn’t a complete bust, as the owners of several nice cars and trucks decided to stay closer to home and have some pizza instead of braving the sea of chrome and billet down south.

Nice turnout for the Outta' Control Hot Rods Cruise in Platte City

Saturday night was a perfect weather night in Kansas City, and I was very happy to see that a bunch of people decided to enjoy that weather at the Outta’ Control Hot Rods Cruise at the Pizza Shoppe in Platte City.  Larry and the boys work really hard to put this event together on the third Saturday of the month, and their hard work is obviously paying off.  In spite of several other cruises going on around town, there was a whole lot full of great stuff to check out here.

Platte City Cruise keeps hummin' along

Every third Saturday of the month, the bright orange water tower calls car enthusiasts like a beacon.  This is Platte City: home of the Outta’ Control Hot Rods monthly cruise.  It is the time where people pack up their hot rods and take the short trek up I-29 for a little Pizza Shoppe and a lot of fun.  But this month was a little tough for Platte City.   Intermittent rain showers and a bad forecast, plus a new event in North Kansas City all conspired to keep car count down.

Platte City Cruise continues to satisfy

Platte City has one of my favorite car cruises each month.  Maybe it’s because I like Pizza Shoppe.  Maybe I just think the Outta’ Control Hot Rods crew does a good job.  Maybe it’s just because I like old cars wherever they are.  I can’t explain it exactly, but that orange water tower seems to call my name on the third Saturday of every month.

Outta' Control Hot Rods Platte City Cruise makes the most of the cooler spring weather

Spring is a nice time of year for car cruises. Take the Outta’ Control Hot Rods Cruise in Platte City on Saturday night.  Compared to the humid, blast furnace-like conditions we’ll get later this summer, this one was considerably more comfortable.  A light jacket, and you were good-to-go.

I like this Platte City Cruise because Larry Colstion and the gang do a nice job putting it together, but also because the parking lot is connected to some decent food choices.  I’m a Pizza Shoppe fan anyway, so getting to attend a car cruise and eat a tasty pizza seems like a win-win situation to me.

The only thing out of control at the Outta' Control Hot Rods Cruise in Platte City was the weather

The Outta’ Control Hot Rods Car Club always holds a nice cruise night on the third Saturday of the month, and in spite of ominous clouds and impending rain, they still enjoyed a strong crowd for the August edition.

This was my last chance to take my 2013 Corvette Grand Sport loaner to an event before General Motors came and took it away forever, so I drove BHo to the land of Sonny Hill with the fiberglass roof panel stored neatly in the rear hatch area. Of course, I hadn’t thought to secure all the flyers that I picked up at the Corvette show earlier in the day, so once we hit 70 on 435, there was a tsunami of car show propaganda blasting all over the cockpit and out in the atmosphere. If I miss your event on the next weekly calendar, this may be the reason.

Slickstock. Where members of the Slick '60s Ford Truck Club get together and eat lots of Pizza Shoppe

As the owner of a 1963 Chevrolet pickup, sometimes it is hard for me to remember that they actually made some other kind of truck in the early-to-mid 1960s. But on our way to dinner Friday night, I stumbled upon a reminder that yes, there really was at least one more brand out there. I think they were called Fords.

Actually, when we saw a bunch of them parked at the Platte Woods Pizza Shoppe, the first thing I thought was, “hey, I didn’t know we had a Ford truck club here in town.” And as it turns out, I thought right. These were members of the Slick ‘60s Club, which is a nationwide group of ’61-’66 Ford F-Series enthusiasts. Every two years these folks meet up for “Slickstock” to catch up on old times, talk trucks, and eat pizza.
