There are people who love every kind of vehicle. Take the tow truck. In theory, this is just a tool to clear wrecks and drag inoperable cars from one place to another. But there’s more to it than that. Tow trucks have a lot of character. Their operators form a bond—a passion—for their trucks and everything that has to do with the towing industry. For some, operating a tow truck is more than just a job. It’s a way of life. And so, it should come as no surprise that there is an International Towing and Recovery Museum and Hall of Fame. We checked it out during our visit to Chattanooga, Tenn., so I wanted to show you some of the interesting trucks that were on display inside.

Monster truck history and Hot Wheels Monster Jam diecasts
When I was growing up in the ‘80s, one thing I always looked forward to was the annual visit from the traveling monster truck tour. Of course, it wasn’t like it is now. Back then, monster trucks crushed cars. And that’s really all they did. They really were monsters, weighing in at some 18,000-lbs. They didn’t jump things. They didn’t race. They didn’t do “freestyle” competitions. They just lumbered over a line of old cars, crept up over them, and buckled the tops and popped the windows out.

Find a little car collectible of your own at W.D. Pickers Antique Mall in Platte City
If you’re like me, you can turn any experience into a car experience. Going to the grocery store? Hey, there’s Jeff Gordon’s car on the Corn Flakes. Going to the doctor’s office? I haven’t read this issue of Motor Trend yet.
Naturally, the old car radar doesn’t shut down at someplace like an antique mall. There could be a stack of Picassos, but if they had an old toy poking out from behind one of them, I wouldn’t see the paintings at all. When it comes to antiquing, I have perfect automotive tunnel vision.
