Big Car Show at the Great Mall of the Great Plains was an excellent way to begin the summer finale countdown

Nobody in their right mind could have spent Saturday anywhere but outdoors, and for the folks that love cars, The Great Mall of the Great Plains in Olathe, Kan., was a nice part of outdoors to spend it. This was what they called the "Big Car Show," and there were quite a few cool cars and trucks on hand to back up this claim.

This was a benefit for the Olathe Police Foundation, so there were some Olathe Police vehicles on hand, including a pretty official-looking ATV, a mobile command center, a motorcycle, and some police cars. There were even a couple of privately owned police cars on display.

But there were plenty of civilian rides shining under the bright Kansas sun as well. A Ford GT was a big hit with the crowd. It looked just like new, except the wax job was better. And of course, there was the expected assortment of hot rods, Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, and Tri-Five Chevys. The Lincoln Continental that was used in the Fox 4 TV Morning Show commercials was even there, so there was a genuine celebrity in the crowd.

Kansas City is a tough place sometimes, because it's either way too hot and humid, or it gets cold and snows. The really nice days are few-and-far-between. Problem is, when we do start having nice days like Saturday, it serves as a warning that the end of car show season is just around the corner. Luckily, there are a few nice events like this show at the Great Mall that we can use to get our fill of car shows before they're all gone.

There are pictures of most of the cars from this event in the slideshow below.

  1. Our thanks to Hover Motor Company for the NICE coverage of our car show. This was quite a surprise. The Olathe Police Foundation would also like to extend a very sincere thank you to everyone who particpated, attended, and/or sponsored our first annual benefit car show. You made this a success. Look for us again in August, 2011........LaVern Fields
