Memorial Day Weekend at the Liberty Car Cruise

The place: historic downtown Liberty, Missouri.  The time: Saturday night, May 26.  The event: the Downtown Liberty Cruise.  Your mission: go there and have a good time.

As it turned out, lots of folks accepted that mission, because as is often the case with this one, the cars were lined all the way around the courthouse on both sides of the street.  Sure, it was a little on the muggy side early, but the temperature dropped a bit eventually, and everyone seemed to be having a great time enjoying all the cool cars.

This cruise draws in way more cars than many organized car shows, and that kind of participation results in a great variety of cars and trucks to look at.  Everything from high-end muscle cars, to '50s cruisers, to full-on classics make seem to make the trip north.

Plus, it's only fitting that they hold a car cruise in a town named Liberty on Memorial Day weekend.  They even played the National Anthem.
One of the breakaway standouts was a black-over-black 1967 Buick Riviera.  It is still owned by the same guy that ordered it brand new, and he was very enthusiastic to recite every specification and detail.  The car only had about 30,000 original miles, and it was as original and slick as the day it rolled off the assembly line.  I mean, this car was so nice that I would seriously be afraid to drive it, lest it picked up a rock chip or other serious malady.

Other interesting cars included a '58 Plymouth that looked like it was right out of the movie Christine, an excellent '57 Ford two-door sedan, a neat little lowered '55 Chevy sedan, and a whole bunch of old trucks, Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes.

And speaking of trucks, I had my old beater out there for the first time this year.  I actually had been driving it to work this spring after I got it out of storage, but now that the weather is getting hotter, I think I'll drive something with an air conditioner to work and leave the 2-55 a/c for the cruise nights.

Let's face it; I don't always have a great feel for what people like.  That's why there are pictures that accompany this article.  Take a look at the slideshow below, and decide for yourself, or click this link for a nicer version.

  1. Sure you do... people like pictures!

Some really great cars there; that Riv is indeed fantastic. As is that silver 68 Chevy pickup. And the pre 74 Corvettes. and that 64 Ford wagon. Oh, the 66/67 Fairlanes were great too. And the Novas. Of course the 62 Impalas rate a mention as well as that black Deuce. And, and, and...

  2. I was going thru the photos again, taking a little better note of a few and looking closer at the early Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds, as well as that green F1 panel, and I noticed that my eyebrows raised and my pulse quickened noticeably at the 71/72 Blazer that was pictured driving by. Is that wrong? :)
