Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise draws in some nice cars

One of the nicer cruises in the Kansas City area is the Basehor Boys Cruise at the Basehor Sonic, which is held on the second Friday of each month.  I hadn’t been able to get there yet this year for one reason or another, but I was finally able to break away last week to check out some of the great cars on display.  Combine all that with nice people, nearby food, and a little music, and you have one of those events that should be on everyone’s list.

This is a really unusual ’51 Dodge Coronet station wagon.  I’m not even sure if I’ve ever seen one of these before, and I know I haven’t seen this one.  This was a classy resto-mod style car, with a late model Hemi under the hood and a modern interior.  That wooden floor in the cargo area was beautiful, and the only major outward clue that you weren’t looking at a stock Dodge was the stance.  I hope we get to see this one around more often.

Here’s a super nice ’62 Impala.  It wasn’t an SS, but it did have the coveted 409-c.i. engine.  It also had black tires and little hubcaps, which is different than most.  SS’s of course came standard with full wheel covers, but you could get a non-SS like this.  This car was nearly perfect inside, outside, and under the hood.  If even had a four-on-the-floor and a column-mounted tach.  You see a lot of old Chevys around, but not many like this one.

This one's a ’39 Buick eight-cylinder two-door sedan.  I don’t know much about it, but I can tell you that it was an exceptionally nice car.  This thing is just good, late-‘30s Art-Deco General Motors design.  It totally looks like something that would have been on the car lot at the header of this blog in about 1943, although knowing my granddad, his wouldn’t have been this nice.  You put 100 high-end modern hot rods and a car like this in the same place, and I’ll gravitate to this every time.

This is also an old Buick, but completely different than the one above.  This ’64 Riviera was really, really nice with two reallys, and had laser-straight black paint and that ever-important bright red interior.  This one was sort of a mash-up between vintage and modern, although that 425-c.i Nailhead still provided the power.  There are a lot of people who consider these Rivieras to be the most beautiful cars ever made.  I have no doubt that this one would be the subject of many a dream.
