The Nashville Auto Fest celebrated its 29th anniversary in the brand-new exhibit buildings at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. The all-in-one layout ensured that I was able to go through the whole thing and not wonder if I missed a building somewhere. As usual, a nice selection of show cars turned out, as well as a modest swap meet. We aren’t quite in the heart of car show season yet, but at least this show gives us a taste of what’s to come this summer. It’s nice to see some old favorites come out of moth balls, and fun to see some of the new cars on the local scene for 2020.

Great day for the 37th-Annual 2018 Bowen Campbell Car Show in Goodlettsville
For 37 years, automotive enthusiasts from all over the Music City have gathered in Goodlettsville for the big Bowen Campbell Auto Expo at Moss-Wright Park. This year was no different, as a huge group of quality rides was on-hand for a surprisingly pleasant, overcast day. This one is put together by the Sumner County Vintage Vehicle Club, which is sanctioned by the AACA. As usual, these AACA shows attract some of the nicest old cars and trucks around. I don’t really enter my own cars in many of these shows, but this one was close enough to home that I actually entered both the ’63 Chevy C-10 and my ’93 Corvette. My son hung out with me, I talked to people about cars, and overall it was just a good day in the park.

Cruise-quality classics at Maple Motors
I might not be completely with it as far as the car show scene here in Nashville yet, but that doesn’t mean I can’t find some interesting old rides to look at. Last night I stopped in at Maple Motors in Henersonville, and there were quite a few things to check out at this family-owned business. For some 30 years, Jim Fite and his family have been selling affordable, driver-quality classics from this location. You might not find many councours-quality rides here, but if you’re looking for a fun car to take to the local cruise-ins, this is your place.

Vintage cars from the 2014 Greater Kansas City International Auto Show
When you go to an event like the Greater Kansas City International Show (GKCIAS), you expect to see the latest and greatest new cars, trucks, and SUVs. What you might not expect to see is a first-rate classic car show. But if you were in Bartle Hall over the weekend, that’s just what you saw. Several groups had vintage iron on display, including the Kansas City Automotive Museum (KCAM), the Art of the Car Concours, the Heart of America Corvair Owners Association (HACOA), and the auto show itself. So if you’re one of those people that says, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to,” there was still something for you at this event.

Mecum Indy event offers rare chance to see 1953 Fiesta, Eldorado, Skylark, and Corvette all in one place
I’ve mentioned before that I think 1953 was the ultimate year in General Motors history. Never mind that it was twenty years before I was even born. The products, legacy, and accomplishments from that year speak for themselves.
But you can’t really get the full impact of just what GM was able to produce just by reading things. You really need to experience the crown jewels of the 1953 GM lineup firsthand. The Mecum Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis is providing a rare, rare opportunity to do just that. Crossing the block will be the ultimate quartet of GM’s most ambitious and sought-after cars; a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1953 Cadillac Eldorado, a 1953 Buick Skylark, and a 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta.
