Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise is still good, even if you get there late

If you hang out here on occasion, you may know that my dad had a heart valve replacement this week.  I’m happy to report that the surgery went well, and he’s resting semi-comfortably at St. Luke’s hospital.  It’ll obviously take awhile to fully recover from this, but at least he cleared a major hurdle.

Since I’ve been spending a lot of time at the hospital after work this week, it means I haven’t written that many stories for the blog.  I was determined to get to an event Friday night, and even though I was late to the party, I eventually made it to the Basehor Boys Sonic Cruise.

Even though many of the cars had left or were in the process of doing so when I arrived, there were still several really nice things to look at.  Don Mayberry of the Basehor Boys Car Club told me there were nearly 100 cars earlier in the evening.  This is becoming a really significant Friday night monthly car cruise.

One of the cars I was really attracted to was a 1941 Packard One-Twenty convertible.  These had just sleek, sporty, Art Deco lines anyway, and this one was extra special because of its condition.  Much of this car was original, including the tarnished and rusty chrome.  Now I love shiny and perfect stuff too, but there’s something to be said for decades of battle scars and experience.  Some of the car, like the seats, appeared to be redone, so that may eventually happen to all of it, which will be good too.  But I sure enjoyed looking at it the way it is now.

The Kansas City Chevelle Club obviously had a pow-wow before this event, because there were several examples of Chevy’s sharp intermediate.  Some of them featured flyers for their upcoming regional car show, which will be held at the Great Mall on September 21-22.

There was a Willys pickup there that caught my eye.  Normally I’m not crazy about these, but this one was an exception.  It had a great stance, perfect red pleated seat, and a decked-out small-block Chevy with three carburetors.  I can’t think of too many of these trucks that I’ve liked better over the years.

Other highlights included a ’71 ‘Cuda that looked resplendent in orange paint with matching orange interior, the ’53 Buick Skylark that we see around here sometimes that is otherworldly fantastic, a good ’65 Chevy four-wheel-drive pickup, and several nicely turned-out hot rods.

Even though I was late, I still managed to click off 122 pictures.  As usual, you can see them in the slideshow below.  Or, click this link for a nicer version of the slideshow.

  1. Some great cars - that light blue Chevy pickup, the blue 442 and the blue Chevelle stand out, but the main thing is that Dad came thru his surgery ok!!! Hang out with dad; we can survive w/o a little coverage til he's ready to go back out with you. :)
